In the last part I briefly showed the rough setup on a breadboard. I found the idea for the circuit in a thread on https://www.microcontroller.net. But now on to the perfboard build… I modified the circuit a little. For example, I removed the BUZ21 that was used and replaced it with an L293D motor driver, because it has an integrated H-bridge, which makes it possible to reverse the motor’s polarity and therefore to change Looping Louie’s direction. The DIP switches, or rather the jumpers used for setting the game mode, are no longer needed on my board either. I only left them on the board for the first perfboard build and for debugging purposes. In my version of the circuit the game mode is selected with a push button, and the four LEDs now show the selected game mode. I wrote a new program for the ATtiny 2313 to match. It was also important to me that the game can be modified easily, without soldering or taking the Looping Louie motor unit apart.

That’s why I came up with a kind of dummy battery that can simply be dropped into the game’s battery compartment. This way the mod pack can also be used in another Looping Louie motor unit without any trouble. The prototype will be tested this weekend first and then transferred to a nicely laid out PCB. A neat little enclosure would be nice too. More on that soon…
UPDATE: There is now a finished PCB.
